TANAMERA – Flagstaff Hill, Port Douglas

Tanamera is an exceptional private residence situated in the exclusive and sought after location of Flagstaff Hill, the highest vantage point in Port Douglas. Tanamera is a luxury dream home and is now being offered for sale.

Port Douglas is located in tropical North Queensland, Australia and is just 40 minutes north of Cairns. Cairns is the centre of commerce for this entire region and has everything the discerning visitor could expect from a vibrant, sophisticated and cosmopolitan city. With an international Airport Cairns is the gateway to one of Australia’s most exciting regions. Situated on the coast, the picturesque village of Port Douglas offers the perfect tropical lifestyle. Here miles of pristine beaches and spectacular world heritage rainforests run parallel to one of the natural wonders of the world …the Great Barrier Reef. Visitors from around the world come to this beautiful region to enjoy its many exciting activities, or just to relax and enjoy a round of golf on one of its world-class courses.

Tanamera is the result of four years of planning and construction and has been built to take full advantage of the sweeping panoramic views of the famous Four Mile Beach to the east and the 5 star luxury Marina on Dickson Inlet to the west.

The concept of the property is of tropical design, in harmony with the natural elements of the land and sea that surround it, and is reflective of the owner’s lifelong experiences in East Africa and Asia. These experiences have provided a unique blend of features that in their way tell the story of Tanamera.

In keeping with the natural gradient of the land, as well as utilizing the natural watercourse that runs through it, the house has been designed on three levels. It has been built to aesthetically blend into the hillside as if part of the landscape using natural materials, finishes and textures and is a continuation of its exceptional natural surroundings. This is evident in the clever use of Palimanan Stone and Bali Marble in the walls that flow from the main entry through the living areas. Throughout the property nature is integrated into the design creating a tranquil landscape and sense of visual serenity that brings beauty into the living spaces and allows the living spaces to flow out to nature.

Water is a key feature of the design, with the natural landscape providing a series of ponds and cascading waterfalls. This is evident through the central atrium which is visible throughout the property. At night the shimmering patterns of running water reflect on the walls and floors of the property evoking the visual senses and creating a tranquil landscape.

The architecture is indeed a blend of East and West, combining eastern architectural concepts with western lifestyle needs. Of importance when designing the house was the ‘fenshui ‘of the home, so revered in Eastern culture.

From the Port Corchere, one is greeted by ponds of flowing water to each side of impressive wrought iron outer gates. These frame the intricately carved teak Balinese double main doors.

The entry lobby leads into a breath taking two storey formal living room with sweeping marble staircase and feature timber vaulted cathedral ceilings. The floors are of Italian Crema Marfil marble and full height sliding recessed doors maximize the panoramic views of the Daintree Hills and extend the formal living area out onto the terrace.

Asian design influences enhanced by the use of subtle lighting create a special setting and thematic palette for the interior.

The majestic living room accesses a raised formal dining room with a full wall window revealing rock features and the natural waterfall within the atrium.

The dining room leads into a beautifully designed gourmet kitchen. High quality black galaxy granite adorns the bench tops while hand crafted Nayatoa timber cupboards spare no expense. The unique features of the kitchen are the stunning Bali marble wall, reminiscent of the coral stone of East Africa, and the 100 year old North Queensland bridge sleepers that are not only used as supports for the structure, but also used to display items of interest and provide an almost ‘Old English’ feel.

The kitchen extends into an enormous laundry and utility room with feature Chinese tiles, Corian bench tops and large heated linen storage cupboards. Shoji sliding doors at one end open to the cascading waterfall within the atrium, its verdant tropical plants creating a magical setting.

On the same level as the formal living room, is the informal day lounge. This stunning minimalistic room is cantilevered out from the main building with floor to ceiling windows providing 180 degree panoramic views. Bamboo floors and double shoji sliding doors open out onto a timber outdoor dining sala and continue the Asian theme. Adjacent is an Asian “wet kitchen” fitted with a Tempanyaki tray allowing for outdoor cooking facilities.

The outdoor terrace extends around the covered dining sala and overlooks the infinity edge pool that flows into the backdrop of the forest beyond. At the far end of the pool there is a double storey waterfall over a wall of Bali marble, where a glimpse of the Master bedroom can be seen hidden in the forest and protected by a Balinese stone seated Buddha

The Master bedroom or ‘parent retreat’ is on the upper level of the house and runs off the main entrance lobby. It is built on ten meter high timber poles over the natural watercourse of the hill and sits in glory as a tree house amongst the tropical rain forest. Entry through the beautiful hand carved teak door leads into a stunning Asian style bedroom with rich Jarrah wood floors and high timber ceilings, while recessed lighting completes the mood. The platform bed has stunning views through open doors to the terrace and spa beyond, which sit high above the pool and waterfall below. Off the walk-in wardrobe, is a small study with tranquil views into the heart of the forest.

The Master Bedroom Ensuite provides a sense of visual serenity with a gently cascading water feature. Water flows gently over the glowing Bali Marble stone outside the window, which can be recessed back into the wall, and allows the space to flow out to nature. A large cast iron bath is set into black galaxy granite and a frameless glass walk–in shower along with hand crafted Sapelle wood vanity units complete the scene. Mood lighting at night provides soft, subtle, romantic light to change the ambience.

From the main living room, a Kwila timber staircase wraps its way down to the lower level. Recessed off the staircase is a small library where quiet time and reflective reading can be enjoyed. The lower level is designed so that it can be a separate annex to the house if desired. This is the family living or guest area and is a multi-purpose room with a small fully fitted kitchenette. It has its own entrance that leads into the large recreation room, which is attractively finished with Sydney blue gum timber floors. Large sliding doors recess back to open the room directly onto the lower level terrace and infinity edged pool.

Leading off the recreation room are the guest quarters with large bedroom and guest ensuite. The bedroom has direct access to the pool for that early morning swim, while the terrace provides a private deck for guest’s entertainment. The ensuite is fitted with a large bath and a window that looks out to the pool and views beyond. The window is curtained by the waterfall to provide privacy. Stunning hand crafted glass tiles with the colours of the Great Barrier Reef shimmer in the iridescent light created by the flowing water. This provides a dramatic palette of color to the stark white vanity unit which is complimented by the floor with its quality Bizet style pool tiles of blue.

On the same level, a hallway leads to two further extra large bedrooms. To the left is a delightful room with a seated bay window situated beneath a colorful backdrop of tropical greenery. A walk-in wardrobe leads through to a dramatic Asian theme bathroom with handcrafted shoji lighting.

The bedroom to the right takes on a sea theme with a vivid blue wall and handmade silver wrought iron lights reflecting the shape of waves. The ensuite bathroom has handcrafted glass tiles in azure blue hues, with hints of gold reminiscent of the colours created when the sun reflects on the Great Barrier Reef. A door leads out onto the timber deck to the pool, allowing the room to be of dual use with access from the pool.

Equal thought has gone into the landscaping surrounding the home. The gardens, stonework and ponds form an integral part of the architectural design to blend the building into the natural environment of the hillside. The Asian influences can be seen through the use of stone Buddha’s, carved reliefs and huge Balinese jardinières. Tropical plants offer color, form, texture, and compositional arrangement to soften the buildings design. All these elements create, complement, and complete a truly inspirational property.

This magnificent high quality tropical home is a work of art with its architectural design, curves, quality workmanship, use of natural materials and finishes. The building continues the essence and ambience of what this stunning area and beautiful natural surroundings have established naturally. It is totally unique and consequently has to be viewed to be truly appreciated.
